Mount Latimojong has seven main peaks, with Rante Mario being the highest point. The Karangan Village trail is the most popular route due to its relatively accessible terrain and lush tropical forest views. During the trek, climbers will pass through several posts with varying terrain, from narrow paths to steep slopes, and might encounter Sulawesi’s endemic wildlife, such as the Maleo bird and the Anoa.

To hike Mount Latimojong, climbers must pay a conservation entry permit (SIMAKSI) fee of IDR 20k per person. For more convenience, there are tour packages available—open trips start from around IDR 1700k per person, while private trips can cost up to IDR 3M per person. These packages usually include transport from Makassar to Baraka, accommodation, meals during the hike, as well as guide and porter services. Mount Latimojong is open year-round for trekking. However, the best time to climb is during the dry season between June and September. Climbers usually begin the ascent around 4:00 AM to catch the sunrise from the Rante Mario summit. Mount Latimojong offers an adventurous climb with spectacular views. You can take an intercity bus to Enrekang, with fares ranging from IDR 125k to IDR 150k depending on the type of bus. From Enrekang, continue to Baraka District by motorbike taxi or rented car for about IDR 100k. From Baraka to Karangan Village (the starting point), you’ll need a jeep or motorbike. Jeep rental ranges from IDR 600k to IDR 1000k depending on negotiation and road conditions.

The Karangan trail consists of several posts, Basecamp to Post 1 (Buntu Kaciling): ±1.5 hours, Post 1 to Post 2 (Gua Sarung Pa’pak): ±2 hours, Post 2 to Post 3 (Lantang Nase): ±1 hour, Post 3 to Post 4 (Buntu Lebu): ±1 hour, Post 4 to Post 5 (Soloh Taman): ±2 hours, Post 5 to Post 6 (Buntu Latimojong): ±1.5 hours, Post 6 to Post 7: ±1 hour, Post 7 to Rante Mario Peak: ±1 hour. The total ascent usually takes around 12 hours, depending on physical condition and weather. Training beforehand is highly recommended due to the challenging terrain. Bring essential gear such as warm jackets, sleeping bags, and lighting tools. Hiring a local guide helps with navigation and provides valuable route information. Always carry your trash back down and preserve the natural environment.
