Gunung Leuser, Aceh – A National Park Bursting with Biodiversity

Nestled in the northern part of Sumatra, Gunung Leuser National Park is one of Indonesia’s last great wildernesses and a crown jewel of ecological diversity. Spanning over 7,900 square kilometers across Aceh and North Sumatra, the park is part of the UNESCO-listed Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra and is renowned for its stunning landscapes and rare wildlife—including the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan, tiger, elephant, and rhinoceros.

Gunung Leuser is often called the “Amazon of Asia” due to its extraordinary biodiversity. This rainforest is home to over 750 animal species and 10,000 plant varieties. Trekking through the park, visitors can spot hornbills, Thomas leaf monkeys, and, if lucky, even an elusive Sumatran tiger. Whether you're an adventurer, wildlife lover, or eco-tourist, Gunung Leuser offers a rare glimpse into a rainforest teeming with life. It’s a humbling reminder of how wild—and fragile—our planet can be. One of the most popular access points is Bukit Lawang, a riverside village on the edge of the park. It’s the gateway to orangutan-viewing treks, jungle camping, and river tubing adventures.
