Once you arrive in the area around Mount Merapi, there are several transportation options available to explore the area.  One of the most popular ways to explore the Mount Merapi area is by jeep. These jeeps can take you through rough terrain, on rocky roads and areas affected by past eruptions. Merapi jeep tours usually start from Selo Village and offer an incredible experience to see the remnants of the eruption and enjoy beautiful views. For those who prefer a challenge, trekking to the summit of Mount Merapi can be a great option. However, this trek is only suitable for experienced hikers or those with good stamina, considering the steep terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. If you prefer to control your journey yourself, you can rent a car or motorcycle in Yogyakarta or Solo to reach the Mount Merapi area. From there, you can continue your journey by jeep or walk around the area. To visit Mount Merapi, you can choose from various activities offered, ranging from trekking to jeep tours. The entrance fee to Mount Merapi’s tourist area is relatively affordable, but the price may vary depending on the type of activity you choose. Trekking is around IDR 50k – IDR 75k per person for basic trekking tours. Jeep Tour is a round IDR 350k – IDR 500k per jeep for group tours, which can accommodate 4-6 people. Mount Merapi can be visited every day, but for trekking or jeep tours, the usual operating hours are from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM WIB. It’s recommended to arrive early to fully enjoy the views and avoid fatigue.

Mount Merapi can be reached by various transportation options, whether from Yogyakarta or other major cities in Central Java. You can use private transport or rent a car available in and around Yogyakarta. The journey to Mount Merapi takes about 1-1.5 hours from Yogyakarta. Take the Kaliurang Road, which is the main access to the Merapi area. If you’re in Solo, the journey to Mount Merapi takes about 2 hours from solo. You can use a private car, public transport, or rent a jeep for a direct tour to the tourist area. If you’re using public transport, you can take a bus from the terminal to the Kaliurang area, then continue your journey by local transport or rental vehicle to the hiking post.
