Gunung Kelimutu, Nusa Tenggara Timur – The Mysterious Three-Colored Lakes

Deep in the highlands of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, lies Gunung Kelimutu, home to one of Indonesia's most surreal natural phenomena: three volcanic crater lakes—each with a different color that changes unpredictably over time. Known as the Danau Tiga Warna (Three-Colored Lakes), Kelimutu has captivated scientists, spiritualists, and adventurers alike for decades.

The three lakes—Tiwu Ata Mbupu (Lake of the Ancestors), Tiwu Nua Muri Ko’o Fai (Lake of the Young), and Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake of the Enchanted or Evil Spirits)—are believed by locals to be the resting places of departed souls. The lakes mysteriously shift between hues of turquoise, green, red, and even black, with no clear scientific explanation for the timing or cause of the changes. This phenomenon has made Gunung Kelimutu not just a geological marvel, but also a deeply spiritual destination. Dress in layers; mornings are cold at the summit. Bring a flashlight or headlamp if arriving before dawn. Respect local customs; the site is considered sacred by locals. Carry water and snacks; limited shops near the summit.
